September Update

Fall is coming! With fall comes the changing of the leaves, cooler temperatures, pumpkin spice everything, and, of course, back-to-school celebrations. While the temperature might not drop as quickly as we would like, CTG is committed to always being cool! ;-) Take a look at what we’re up to this month!

Monday ESL Classes
Classes on Monday have started back up again. They will run until October 7th, but will not meet on Labor Day on September 2nd. At the end of the semester, students and volunteers will take a trip to the Philadelphia Zoo to practice all our newly learned English skills.

Thursday ESL Classes
Classes on Thursday are taking a short break, but will resume on September 9th. Thursday night classes will continue until October 17th.

Amazon Smile!
Exciting news! Crossing the Gap is now registered under Amazon Smile. This means that when you shop at smile.amazon.com a portion of your purchase will be donated to Crossing the Gap. Read more about AmazonSmile here.

Hire a Driver Campaign
In order to better serve our students, CTG has launched a “Hire a Driver” campaign. For many of students, transportation is a huge barrier that prevents them from attending English classes. To meet this need, CTG seeks to hire a driver who will be responsible for taking students to and from English classes on Monday and Thursday nights. To find out more, click here.

Important Upcoming Dates:

    • Monthly General Volunteer Meeting on September 22nd at 2pm at FCC Collingswood. This meeting will discuss fundraising, marketing, networking/partnering with new organizations and other volunteer opportunities that are not related to the ESL program
    • New Volunteer Orientation on October 2nd at 6:00pm at Fellowship Community Church at Collingswood. All new volunteers are required to attend.

    • Teacher’s Training on October 9th at 6:00pm FCC Collingswood. New Class Leads should arrive at 6pm; experienced Class Leads should show up at 7pm. Only volunteers who are serving as Class Leads are required to come.

Volunteer Needs:

    • Thursday Night ESL Classes
Because our Thursday night class is so new, we’re still in need of teachers to help run the class. The more teachers we can recruit, the more we can spread out the teacher responsibilities.
    • Volunteer Interviews
Are you a current CTG volunteer? Would you be interested in sharing your experiences with CTG? CTG is looking for volunteers to answer a few interview questions about their experiences with CTG. These responses will be posted on the CTG blog for a bi-monthly feature called “Meet Us Mondays.” If interested, please email crossingthegapnjATgmailDOTcom for more information.
